Ten years ago, Steve Jones began his career in the pool service business in Southern California . . a long way from his London, England, birthplace.
As a youth, Steve was impetuous and quit high school in 1967 at 15. Due to his slight stature, he claims that he had two choices of occupations-becoming a jockey or a page boy. He chose the latter as he wasn't fond of horses and advanced to junior clerk at the famous Savoy Hotel on the Strand in London
At 21, he set out on a junket that would find him spending several years in Spain, Holland and travelling Europe. Returning to England, he worked as an electrician and advanced to electrical site foreman.
However, after visiting the United States twice, Steve decided to settle in California and make it a truly Anglo-American affair.
Because Steve had been both a plumber and electrician in the past, he attempted to look for a job in both those areas, but was told he would have to start at the bottom and work his way up, something which he didn't necessarily want to do. As he continued to explore vocational possibilities, in July 1989, he observed with some curiosity a swimming pool that was being built in his next door neighbor's backyard.
As he watched, he realized that a pool involved both of his previous areas of expertise-plumbing and electricity. The friendly yellow pages were his next step and under "swimming pools" he found a small distributor in the South Bay area who offered to train him in pool service.
Steve worked for Discount Pool Supply for a while and then began to build his own route. He is quite proud of the fact that he passed the L.A County Health Department exam in January of 1990, the same year he joined IPSSA. He has since successfully passed the IPSSA Water Chemistry certification test and hopes to get his California State Contractor's license this year.
His company, Anglo-American Pool & Spa, some 80 pools (mostly residential) serves the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the beach cities just north, Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo Beach areas. Most of his new business comes from referral, but he has also had success running a yellow pages ad and displaying the IPSSA logo
